6th grade study guide

Study Guide Chapter 3 (use your books and notes to focus on the following)

I. Cell Structure

· Compare the functions and structures of plant and animal cells

· 6 activities of living things- Nutrition respiration excretion response and movement & growth reproduction

· Be able to trace the organization of living things from cells to systems

Ex. Similar cells make up tissue, different tissue make up organs, etc…

· Identify the following cell organelles and know their functions:

Cell membrane cell wall Nucleus nuclear membrane

Endoplasmic reticulum mitochondrion

Chloroplast vacuoles

II. Cellular processes

· Understand and be able to explain:

Diffusion osmosis

Active transport respiration

Photosynthesis

· Identify the phases of mitosis (page 43 in your book)

Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase

· Identify the phases of meiosis (page 46-47)

Interphase, prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telophase I,

Meiosis II, Anaphase II, Telophase II

III. Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes

Know the similarities and differences between the two (look in your notes)

Give examples of prokaryotes and eukaryotes

Prokaryotes- strep, E. coli, staph, salmonella, staph

Eukaryotes: fungi, plants, animals, Paramecium, Amoeba

yeast, mushroom, bread mold,

oak tree, fern, pine, sunflower starfish, grasshopper, rabbit, sponge
